JAPN 304 Intro Translate & Interpret This course is an introduction to translating and interpreting that provides an overview of the knowledge necessary for the field of translation and interpretation. Students will study general issues involved in translating and interpreting and the building blocks for the necessary knowledge and techniques including rapid reading, analyzing, summarizing and paraphrasing, listening comprehension, and shadowing. Taught in Japanese. JAPN 304 Helped me reach the second point of MLO 1 because in this class we were challenged to translate and interpret Japanese. Our understanding of both English and Japanese was tested when we were tasked with identifying and understanding the tone and severity of a text in either language. As the class progressed we moved on to listening to a given piece of information and trying to interpret into English. The most challenging aspect of this to me was still the fact that I wanted to capture the severity of the speech but I would sometimes feel that I didn't have the skill to do so. I came to the realization that in order to progress I had to learn subtle differences between words in both English and Japanese. It was also a great opportunity to look back and examine the grammar and sentence structure of both languages to gain a better understanding of the core concepts of structure. JAPN 311 Social Issues In Japan As the drive to rebuild modern Japan after WWII slowed, latent and new social problems have become visible. This course offers interdisciplinary perspectives on issues such as aging and depopulation, equitable treatment of homeless individuals and other minorities, gender and labor issues, social withdrawals, educational structure problems, and ecological concerns. Taught in English. JAPN311 (Social Issues in Japan) exposed me to geographical and societal issues that I had never been exposed to, including environmental issues, the current education system, gender roles and expectations, and the culture of sex. This course allowed me to have discussions with my peers, in where we could better understand how our own cultures influence our understanding of foreign concepts. It was refreshing due to the fact that most of the class came from different backgrounds that affected their way of thinking differently. Despite this we could put aside our past notions and collaborate in trying to understand Japanese culture through an objective international lens. JAPN 404 Advanced Japanese Research This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral and written presentations to finalize research project for Capstone in Japanese using appropriate media. Taught in Japanese. JAPN 404, Taught the proper way to develop a thesis for my capstone, as well as learn the necessary grammar and vocabulary that would eventually help me and my partner accurately convey our findings in Japanese. Together we gained a good understanding as to what kind of questions we needed and exactly how to word them in order to gain the data we needed while limiting as many variables as we could. It was an on going process but using Google's applications (Google Docs, Slides, Forms) aided in this project, as it was completed as a pair over a long period of time. WLC 400 WLC Major Capstone Students work with the instructor and WLC faculty advisors to research, synthesize, write and present their Capstone projects. Students will also assemble a Graduation Portfolio reflecting how each MLO was met. This course is required for all Japanese, Spanish and World Languages and Cultures majors. WLC 400 allowed me to continue using Google as a resource to finish my project. Programs, such as Google Forms, allowed my partner and I to created Japanese and English surveys that would later be sent to students in Japan and the United States. As our data accumulated we used Google sheets to create graphs and charts to present our research to our classmates throughout the semester. Finally, my partner and I used a combination of Google Docs and Microsoft Word to transfer the information from our presentations into research papers written in Japanese and English. |
