JAPN 303 Business Japanese: This course develops functional use of Japanese language for various types of situations and events that occur in the daily business environment. The types of situations include formal introductions, basic business rules, business etiquette, honorifics, and how to write business documents and email. It also presents and expands on cultural perspectives and concepts as they impact the business world. Taught in Japanese. In this class I was given the opportunity to Meet MLO 1.1 and 1.2. In this class we have learned new ways of expressing ourselves in a culturally appropriate professional setting. We have learned not only a new range of vocabulary but we have learned how what/whom we talk about and who we are talking to changes to reflect Japanese social hierarchy. This concept was highlighted for me with the introduction of 社内 and 社外, or internal and external members of a company. I was an eye opener for me to see how relations differed between one's self and a superior within your own group and one's self and an outside member (especially in relation to an other in group member). I hope to use what I have learned in this class when I eventually return to Japan in order to work. I hope to not only improve my verbal communication but also improve my nonverbal interactions with potential co-workers. Using what we have learned in class it is easy to draw parallels between the american and Japanese work force but I believe the subtle nuances explained in this class also highlight some very important differences in our societies. Such as Japans high value on a hierarchy of experience versus Americas strive for innovation through a more individualistic and skill based means. JAPN 320S Advanced Japanese SL *Please see Service Learning page* JAPN 403 Pre-Capstone This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral and written presentations to develop research project for Capstone in Japanese using appropriate media. In JAPN 403, we were taught how to do professional, academic research for our Capstone projects. I was able to use programs such as Zotero to collect and store academic sources. I later used this bank of sources to develop a bibliography for my Capstone project. With the new information and skills I gathered in this course, such as the use of the database Cinii, I was able to find a variety of articles and other resources based on my topic.
