MLO 1: LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION
1.1 Students are able to communicate effectively in Japanese in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational; and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Intermediate-High level of language proficiency, according to the ACTFL Guidelines.
1.2 Students gain competency in the Japanese language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and discourse, and compare and analyze the structural differences between Japanese and English.

Reflective Narrative
1.1:
As most of my classes helped improve my understanding of the Japanese language in some way it can be a bit hard to narrow it down to just a few classes to talk about for this MLO. That being said I believe that the real start of my deeper understanding began while I was abroad. Yes lower division gave be the foundation I needed to effectively communicate, being immersed in the culture is what really drove me to think more deeply about how culture effects the way we think about language. Upon my return I began to take classes like business Japanese, which was taught entirely in Japanese. This class was essential to my meeting the Japanese MLO 1 requirement. This class gave me another view into Japanese society I haven't had the chance to previously explore. The intricacy of the Japanese Business world is something I am very glad I had a chance to explore and it helped be better understand why things were don in a particular way and how to express myself in that environment without causing any unwanted friction. I feel confident in my ability to interact with Japanese people in a more professional capacity because of this class.
For this, I chose to use my Business Japanese final video script. This script allowed us to use different grammar and vocabulary in a fun and open way. Although it was an interesting the assignment was sometimes difficult due to the fact that we had to change our normal way of thinking to meet a more professional standard. The grammar used was a prime example of what we used.

JAPN 304 Helped me reach the second point of MLO 1 because in this class we were challenged to translate and interpret Japanese. Our understanding of both English and Japanese was tested when we were tasked with identifying and understanding the tone and severity of a text in either language. As the class progressed we moved on to listening to a given piece of information and trying to interpret into English. The most challenging aspect of this to me was still the fact that I wanted to capture the severity of the speech but I would sometimes feel that I didn't have the skill to do so. I came to the realization that in order to progress I had to learn subtle differences between words in both English and Japanese. It was also a great opportunity to look back and examine the grammar and sentence structure of both languages to gain a better understanding of the core concepts of structure.
My evidence for this is my final presentation for my JAPN 304 Translation and Interpretation class. This presentation is a clear example of the methods used to interpret because it shows both the Japanese and the English versions of the sentence that explains the picture.
